Q: Friday nights my family & I have dinner at our favorite pizza restaurant.  Now that I’ve been diagnosed with diabetes I don’t know what to order.  Could you help me with what (if anything) I can order?

A: Spending time with your family is great way to relax and nothing like a nice family dinner at a favorite restaurant! Remember a lot of eat-out places have their menu on their website along with the nutritional information. You can take a look at it and decide beforehand as to what you can order based on the nutritional information. Also, you can ask if the food can be made to order based on your dietary restrictions.

Some of the choices you can make is order a whole grain crust if available, also you can choose thin crust over hand toss and pan pizza. Avoid extra cheese, garlic sauce and parmesan cheese; instead go with crushed red chili pepper and black pepper. Order one side dish and share it with the family to restrict your caloric intake. If possible order a glass of water with a slice of cut lemon instead of any soft drinks.

If you are planning on eating out balance your other meals accordingly, exercise for 15-30 min so that you do not over indulge. If possible eat a salad or a fruit before going out for dinner so that way you will be half full. Do not stuff yourself instead enjoy talking to your family and eat slowly with properly chewing the food and savoring it in your mouth.
